The third round of the European Youth Chess Championship 2014 in Batumi finished today, and in some groups favorites already emerged.In the oldest boys group three players have maximum score – Valerii Iovcov from Romania, IM Alexey Zenzera from Russia and FM Melih Yurtseven from Turkey. Yurtseven defeated the top seed GM Avital Boruchovsky from Israel in the 3rd round. In girls group U18 two Azerbaijan players tie with 3/3: WFM Ulviyya Fataliyeva and WIM Gunar Mammadzada.Five players are in the lead with the perfect score in the group Boys U16, while six players top the group Girls U16.In the group Open U14 six players are in the lead, and in section Girls U14 five players tie with the maximum score: 3 Russians, 1 Greek and 1 English girl.In the most numerous group in Batumi – Open U12, 6 boys gained 3 out of 3, while in girls section U12 5 participants have maximum score.In the youngest groups U8 and U10 many players won all 3 games and it is too early to predict the favorites.The top games of each group are broadcast live every day at 3.00 pm local time.More information at the official websiteRead more
The 24th European Youth Chess Championship has officially started. The competition gathered 989 young chess players from 45 European countries, divided in 12 categories: U8, U10, U12, U14, U16 and U18, boys and girls separately.The Championship takes place in Batumi, costal town in Georgia, 18-29 October, 2014 in hotel Sheraton Batumi, and is organized by the European Chess Union and Georgian Chess Federation.Last evening the opening ceremony was held in Batumi Drama Theatre in the great atmosphere and with rich cultural and art programme.Mr. Zurab Azmaiparashvili, President of the European Chess Union greeted all the participants and wished them a successful tournament.Before the first round started, Mr Azmaiparashvili made a symbolic first move in the game between Matyas Marek and Avital Boruchovsky on board 1 in the group Boys U18, along with the Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs of Georgia, Mr. Levan Kipiani, and officially opened the competition. Traditionally the most numerous competition organized by the European Chess Union, the European Youth Chess Championship will take place from 18th till 29th October, 2014. The tournament will be held in Batumi, beautiful Georgian town on the Black see cost, in hotel Sheraton Batumi.The Championship will be played in 12 different categories: U8, U10, U12, U14, U16 and u18, boys and girls separately. Each group will play a Swiss tournament in 9 rounds, with the time control 90 minutes for 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes for the rest of the game + 30 seconds increment per move, starting form move one.990 children from 45 European countries have registered so far, and we are expecting a great and strong competition. The federation with the largest number of registered players is the host – Georgia, with 139 participants, followed by Russia with 136, Azerbaijan with 96, Armenia with 64 players, etc.The organizers provided valuable prizes for the winners - laptop computers, cameras and mobile phones, and made sure that all the participants will have a pleasant and memorable stay in Batumi.Batumi will host the ECU Board and Extraordinary General Assembly during the Championship, and in 2018 this town will be the host of the 43rd Chess Olympiad, the most prestigious chess competition. This year's Chess Festival was organized by the greatest woman chess player of all time Judit Polgar.The festival offered a full day family programme in the Budapest Palace of Arts.Children had a chance to enjoy the Diverse Arts & Crafts activities in the spirit of chess. The activities were organized in co-operation with CeramiCafe, Happy Kids International Kindergarten, PlayMais and Poli-Farbe. At the Chess Palace Promenade kids enjoyed in interactive games, contests conducted by teachers and chess instructors. The children\'s favorite Chess Song and a spectacular Chess Dance, choreographed especially for the occasion were presented on the stage.Apart from the programme for children, the 2nd Chess Palace International Educational Conference, supported by OTP Fay Andras Foundation took place.Mr. Zurab Azmaiparashvili, President of the European Chess Union was among the honored quests of the festival and took part in the press conference. This year's Chess Festival was organized by the greatest woman chess player of all time Judit Polgar.
Armenian Chess Federation officially confirmed that the European Individual Chess Championship for Men will be held in Yerevan from 2-15 March, 2014. The prize fund will be 160.000 euros, and the competition will be held according to the usual regulations in 11 rounds.
